New works in progress. I’ve always been fascinat New works in progress. I’ve always been fascinated with the aesthetics of food and farmland, and with this series of pots, vessel form has started to merge with vegetable silhouette. While these are, in fact, profiles of cabbages translated from drawings to plates... to me they are less about exact reproduction and more of an exercise in attention. Things I’ve been thinking about as I sit and carve these rims: how human scale dictates how I perceive farmland and also gardens. Tools and their relationship to our bodies. How all healthy landscape design forces you to consider light, scale, and form. How regenerative farming requires the constant consideration of multiple timescales in a very lovely way. Do all of these thoughts come out in the pots? No. Not at the moment. For me, how much I ask my pots to hold can be a philosophical question as much as a functional one. For now, the tall feet and wild rims are an exercise in casting shadows... and maybe challenging functionality and food presentation a bit. I’m enjoying the slow down of hand building again... and delighting in the new merging of digital drawing in my process - even as I fight the internalized anxiety created by decreased production. Anyone else get this? Many thanks to @jyhoward for the nudge to start using procreate.

Sometimes the change is wild and unexpected, like the orange pot I posted a last week... sometimes it’s more subtle. For me, starting to fire in a gas kiln again means For me, starting to fire in a gas kiln again means embracing the quirky pots of the firing. This small side plate was sitting right by the exit flue and it’s placement in the kiln is what gave it this gentle orange blush. It was the only one in the firing like it. While this color wasn’t my intention, its kind of fun to have the voice of the kiln keeping me on my toes again. Ps. This was the pot I decorated during my very fun studio visit with @harvardceramics earlier this summer!
